FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK
Id-Dar tal-Providenza's past has been an inspiration. The very name is a slogan. It conveys the idea of care and love for those persons in the community who have special needs. This compound of three Homes has lived through years of maturation and development of that idea. Id-Dar was a pioneer and an inspiration.
Thanks to Mgr Azzopardi (1910-87), whose name is synonymous with these Homes, and other pioneers in the care of persons with disability, we are all becoming more sensitive and aware of what special needs mean to the individual and to society. The very care we take to use the right terms is symptomatic.
Id-Dar tal-Providenza has a challenging future. It is catering for an odd 130 residents. On the one hand there is demand to extend that service to more people. On the other hand it is imperative to follow the conclusions reached practically everywhere the world. The residents should live in small family groups. Id-Dar has embarked on an experiment in nearby Siggiewi. Smaller groups living separately, of course, need more personnel and cost more than our big homes.
The aim will always be rehabilitation which, in practice means independence and, eventually integration in society. These Homes are grateful to the many friends who share these ideals and give a helping hand in their attainment.

Villa Mgr Gonzi is the original Home founded in 1965 but the building goes back much further.
It was constructed for the use of British Royal Navy personnel during World War II and inevitably the years have taken their toll. Its fabric has deteriorated to such an extent that it needs to be rebuilt.
This development presents an opportunity as well as a challenge since it will be possible to incorporate the most up-to-date facilities in a purpose-built Home thus creating an environment for the residents which an adapted building is unable to provide fully.
Obviously, this rebuilding will require a great deal of financing. If you can help, donations will be gratefully accepted at the following address:
