Of Charity

The sisters of
Charity of St. Joan antide Thouret, founded on the 11th April
1799, are international community, currently working in some 25
countries throughout the world.
Monsignor Michael
Azzopardi, our founder, approached the Mother General, Sister
Maria Candida Torchino, of the Sisters of Charity in Rome to ask
for assistance and she gave her consent to the Superior in Malta
to send four nuns to Id-Dar Tal-Providenza.
On the 12th
January 1968 under the leadership of Sister Maria Assunta Mallia
the nuns took up residence in the newly built convent, which houses
its own Chapel. They were the Homes original carers who, in early
February 1968 were responsible for looking after its first residents
- a group of children with a range of diverse impairments.
Initially life
was very hard for the nuns, they had to do everything for the
residents including cleaning, taking care of their personal hygiene,
cooking their meals, washing-up and putting them to bed. Later
they were helped by volunteers and subsequently by employed lay
personnel. The Sisters continue to give their services which include
the responsibilities of coordination, communication and lovingly
for all of the residents.
Today each residential
flat has an appointed complement of Care-workers working with
a Sister who is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running
of the residence, with special responsibilities for the health
and and well being of its occupants.
When a resident
falls ill, the Matron is immediately advised, it is her responsibility
to call any of the doctors or psychiatrists, who between them
give Id-Dar Tal-Providenza a twenty-four hour service - on a voluntary
basis. The Homes also use the services of the Health Centre Medical
Staff.
The Sisters also
have the overall responsibility for the collection and distribution
of medicines to each of the residence and they supervise the administration
of all medicines.
Above all, the
Sisters strive to provide the calm, peaceful, loving environment,
which is so important for the well being of all of the residents
of Id-Dar Tal-Providenza. Their 'duties', lovingly carried out,
encompass all aspects of the true definition of the word 'care'.
